Trying to chase down a regional title proved to be a little tougher than expected Monday for the Windsor girls golf team. The Wizards captured second with a team score of 259 at the Eagle Trace Country Club in Broomfield.

Broomfield won the event with a mark of 239 on its home course.

With its second-place finish, the Wizards did qualify three seniors for the state tournament May 19-20 at Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden. Erica Schlomer shot an 85, good enough for fifth, Erika Balfanz carded an 86 and Kristen Heiden notched an 88.

Freshman Morgan Maack shot a 97, five strokes off the cut.

“I kind of had a rough day,” Schlomer said. “But luckily, it was good enough to make it to state.”

Schlomer only had one birdie, at No. 16, to go with seven pars, eight bogeys and three double bogeys or higher. Though she struggled at No. 12 and No. 5, the par-5 No. 16 saw Schlomer escape a little bit of trouble.

Schlomer hit her tee shot behind a tree, but she was able to punch her second shot up to the front of the green on her second shot. She chipped up and putted in for only birdie of the day.

“I told them to just play steady,” Windsor head coach Jeff Herring said. “We just have to be consistent and work on our putting.”

Heiden had one of her best rounds of the year with three birdie attempts, but just came up short on her putts.

“I’m really excited,” said Heiden, a senior. “My driving and my chipping were really good today (Monday).”

Schlomer, Heiden and Balfanz now turn their attention to Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden for the state tournament. Rolling Hills will feature a 6,000 yard par-73 course to challenge the Wizards, who hope to bring home their first state title.

“My biggest goal is to work on seeing the shot,” Schlomer said. “I just need to trust my swing.”
