FREDERICK — As it was last year, the Windsor football team is off to a hot start.

The Wizards shut down Frederick 21-7 in a Class 3A Tri-Valley matchup Friday at Alex Tensone Field a week after a 42-32 win against Fossil Ridge.

Junior running back Conner Glenn led the way offensively for Windsor (2-0, 1-0 conference) with 114 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the Wizards held the Warriors to 58 total yards thanks in part to senior defensive lineman Brad Nichols.

Nichols pressured Frederick (1-1, 0-1 conference) quarterback Adrian Clough all night and recorded more than 10 tackles.

“We just worked as a team, stuck together and not trying to go off and do our own thing,” Nichols said.

In the first quarter, Windsor started to drive into Frederick territory, but the drive was halted after Glenn fumbled, one of two Windsor fumbles on the night. The Warriors recovered, and Frederick then scored on a 4-yard touchdown run Clough to go up 7-0.

Windsor bounced back in the second quarter whren senior running back Sam Collentine set up a first-and-goal after a 13-yard scamper. Glenn then pounded out a 2-yard touchdown run to even the score at 7.

“I felt like the line was able to hold the blocks up front, and that’s where everything starts,” Glenn said. “I just saw holes and took it.”

The second half was a penalty filled defensive battle as neither team threated to score until late in the fourth quarter. Windsor was flagged for seven penalties for 50 yards.

Late in the fourth, with the Wizards driving inside the Warriors 40, Glenn lost his second fumble, and Frederick regained life. On the ensuing play, Clough was picked off by senior safety Jay Hess, Clough’s second interception on the night, and that’s when emotions started to run high.

Senior cornerback Craig Von Allman and Jeff Stein got tangled up, and Stein was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct as Windsor went on to seal the game.

“They (Frederick) really wanted this game based on last year,” Windsor coach Chris Jones said of last season’s last-second win against Frederick. “My hats off to them.”

Collentine sealed the win with a 21-yard touchdown run. Windsor junior quarterback Trevor Okamoto went 3-for-8 for 41 yards while senior wide receiver Andrew Kish had three catches for 41 yards.

Next up for the Wizards is a date with defending state champion Berthoud at 7 p.m. in Berthoud.
