JOHNSTOWN — Speed and power propelled the Roosevelt football team to a 20-7 Class 3A Tri-Valley Conference win against Windsor on Friday.
Roosevelt (5-1 overall, 4-1 conference) junior running back Jeff Kielian carried the offense with his legs while the defense didn’t allow a point until the fourth quarter. Kielian rushed for 121 yards on 24 carries as the Rough Riders bounced back from a 21-16 loss to Berthoud last week.
Windsor (4-2, 3-2), however, couldn’t get anything started on offense and were held to 20 total yards in the first half.
“We knew their defense was solid and we know our offense is better than that, but we have to rebound next week,” Windsor head coach Chris Jones said.
Roosevelt took the game’s first possession and marched 64 yards to go up 7-0. The Rough Riders opening drive was highlighted by a 17-yard run by Kielian down to the Wizards 16-yardline.
Senior quarterback Brandon Montoya then ran left and scored from seven yards out to give the Rough Riders the early lead.
“They (the offensive line) were opening up so many big holes and Windsor just wasn’t wrapping up,” Kielian said.
Roosevelt’s defense held Windsor to a three-and-out and the offense came back with another long scoring drive. Kielian added runs of 13 and six while running back Adam Liges broke loose for 13 yards to give the Rough Riders first-and-goal at Windsor’s seven.
Montoya again ran left and slipped into the end zone to put Roosevelt up 14-0.
“I’m pleased with the fact that the offense looked good,” Roosevelt head coach Ed Eastin said. “We’ve been struggling on offense. Those two series you can build on. The kids can watch it and see what we did do and understand how to do it.”
In the second quarter Windsor got a little momentum going after senior Clay Haverty returned a Roosevelt punt 25 yards to the Rough Riders 45-yardline.
Windsor senior running back Sam Collentine broke free for seven yards on a fourth-and-one to give the Wizards life at the 29. Two plays later, junior quarterback Trevor Okamoto ran left and pitched the ball over Collentine’s head for a fumble and Roosevelt recovered.
“They controlled the line of scrimmage and when there was a run they stuffed the line,” Windsor senior wide receiver Craig Von Allman said.
Roosevelt managed a pair of 32-yard field goals by Hilary Hito in the second half.
With 4 minutes, 4 seconds left in the third, Windsor mounted its only scoring drive. Starting from their own 13, the Wizards went 87 yards, but was benefited by a Roosevelt turnover.
On first and 10 from the Rough Riders 23-yardline, Okamoto was flushed from the pocket and scrambled to his right. Okamoto then threw back across to senior Jay Hess, but was intercepted by Brandyn Hernandez.
Hernandez returned the interception to the 27, but was stripped by Hess and Windsor recovered. As the ball changed possession, Windsor started with a first-and-10 from the 27.
Two plays later, Okamoto hit Von Allman on a 13-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 17-7.
