Skyview Elementary students vote in the 2008 Vote For School Lunch election Oct. 10 at the school. Pete Pizza was the winner and will be submitted to the School Nutrition Association (SNA) and await the results from the other school districts around the country, which should be announced today.
They may not be at the voting age, but Windsor-Severance Re-4 School district students voted in an important election during the month of October.
The third annual Vote for School Lunch was held at each of the elementary schools in the district on Oct. 10. The students, surrounded by official voting booths from the Weld County Clerk and Recorder office, had a critical decision to make by choosing from the five lunch candidates: Pete Pizza, Biff Burger, Larry Lasagna, Gloria Grilled Cheese and Petunia Pita Pocket.
I voted for the pizza because it has a lot of cheese and its yummy and greasy, said Skyview Elementary School fourth-grader Sydney Graff.
Sydneys classmate, Gabriele Robbins, said she didnt like the taste of Larry Lasagna.
It was good to vote so people know which one was better, Gabriele, 9, said.
Laura Stoneman, the districts director of nutrition, and her staff counted the votes last week and the winner with 671 votes was Pete Pizza. Stoneman said 1,138 students voted in this years election. Pete will be submitted to the School Nutrition Association (SNA) and await the results from the other school districts around the country, which should be announced today.
Sydney said she liked voting because she felt she was contributing to her school. She said she cant wait to vote for the president in nine more years.
Its important to vote because its fun and you get to do something for your school, she said.
According to the SNA, the Vote for School Lunch started in 2006 to help educate parents and students on the nutritional programs available in schools and reveal the many ways school lunches have evolved. In addition to getting students excited about making healthy choices in the lunchroom, the "Vote" campaign will relay facts on what balanced school meals consist of today.
Last year, Biff Burger won the election and went up against Pete Pizza, the 2006 and first-ever 'Vote For School Lunch' campaign winner, and the three student-designed "Design a Candidate" contest winners (Larry Lasagna, Gloria Grilled Cheese and Petunia Pita Pocket).
Stoneman said last year bringing this activity into the district for the three years is teaching the students several things.
I like this activity because it is fun for the students, and they can voice their opinions about the foods they eat by voting for their favorite meal character, Stoneman said.
The elementary schools will have a Pete Pizza lunch celebration Nov. 14.
2008 Vote For School Lunch Results
