Wendy Seaman knows all about the hard work it takes to compete in the annual Harvest Festival Queen Pageant.
Seaman, the pageant coordinator who participated in the competition 31 years ago as a high school senior, said the five girls entered have been practicing for the big event since June. The pageant, which is free to the public, takes place at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Windsor High School auditorium. Cookies and punch will be served following the pageant.
“It's really a great group of girls,” said Seaman, a 1979 Windsor High School graduate. “We've been doing four- and five-hour practices on Saturday at the community center. We've been there every single night this week.”
The pageant is in its 40th year. Seaman said there were originally 10 girls signed up, but five are left due to time commitments.
The five Windsor High School seniors competing in the pageant are: Candace White, Megan Talbott, Jasmine Aas, Shannon McAvoy and Natalia Maxwell.
“These girls are very excited to be in the pageant,” Seaman said. “They are really talking it up with classmates and people in the community. I'm hoping that we have a good turnout for them because the girls are inviting so many people.”
The judges will combine scoring in poise, physical fitness, personal interviews, creative and performing arts and scholastic achievement.
The personal interviews took place Sunday, and the final competition will be held Saturday night. The scores from the interview portion and scholastic achievement will be combined with the other areas of competition.
Last year, Lyndsay Lack accepted the crown from 2007 winner Laura Hazel. Lack will crown this year's winner.
The winner will receive a $1,000 college scholarship. The first runner-up will receive a $750 scholarship, and the second runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship.
The girls will receive gifts donated from the community after the judges award a winner in each category.
Seaman said the five girls will have a lot of responsibilities after the pageant, too.
“They'll be doing a lot of community service over the Labor Day weekend at the Harvest Festival events,” Seaman said. “They're serving the food with the After Prom committee at the street dance. They'll make an appearance at the street dance. They're in the parade. They're going to perform at the park on Monday (Sept. 7) at 1. They have to do some community service afterwards to kind of pay back the money that the community gives for them.”
