Kevin Johnson called his last meeting with his players Wednesday at lunch to tell them he'll no longer be their baseball coach.
Johnson, 39, submitted his resignation as the head coach of the Windsor High School baseball program citing the need to spend more time with his family.
“The biggest reason is family. I've got a sixth-grader and a third-grader, and they're getting involved in baseball and softball,” Johnson said. “I just don't have the time to take away from my family to fully commit to springs and the summers like it needs to be to do what's in the best interest of the program. It's a 12-month commitment anymore, and my family is a bigger priority. I love those kids and want to be there for those kids, and I can't do that and take time away from my family.”
Johnson said Wednesday's final meeting with his ball club wasn't easy.
“Especially for those kids that are going to be seniors and juniors that have been around for a while, it was hard to look at them and say I'm not going to coach them anymore. Absolutely,” said Johnson, a Windsor resident who will still stay on as health and physical education teacher at Windsor High School.
Windsor High School athletic director Mark Kanagy said he also is looking for a new head boy/girls track coach for the spring. Ross Wilbur, the Wizards' track coach last spring, resigned from that post but is still coaching boys and girls cross country this fall.
