It's not too often when you turn on ESPN and see a current Windsor High School football player playing against the best of the best.
Like never.
Windsor senior offensive tackle Joey O'Connor played in the 2012 Under Armour All-America High School Football Game that was televised live Thursday night on ESPN at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The 6-foot-4, 290-pound O'Connor was on the losing Black team, 49-16 losers to the White team coached by former NFL head coach and ESPN NFL analyst Herm Edwards, but O'Connor did see a lot of action during the game. O'Connor's Black team was coached by former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci.
O'Connor, a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and ESPNU, was the only player from Colorado who played in the game.
O'Connor, wearing the No. 60 he wore for Windsor, didn't start the game, something that he's not used to since he started at Windsor as a freshman. An offensive tackle for the Wizards, O'Connor lined up at right guard and saw his first action on the line in the second quarter when the Black team drove down the field and kicked a field goal.
O'Connor's best two plays of the night were in the second half — a block on Alabama recruit Dakota Ball (6-2, 290) that opened a hole for running back Avery Johnson (LSU recruit) for 28 yards, and a tackle on Florida State recruit Marvin Bracy on a punt return.
O'Connor's next highlight in his recruiting experience will be an official visit to Ohio State on Friday through Jan. 15. O'Connor has narrowed his college choices down to Ohio State, Iowa, Boise State, TCU and Cal, but an Internet report last week had Oklahoma showing interest.
O'Connor could also be seen on ESPNU last Monday and Tuesday during the Under Armour practices at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
