Windsor seniors Aaron Schmidt (Adams State College in Alamosa) and Trevor Miller (Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction) signed letters-of-intent to play football Wednesday at Windsor High School in front of a crowd of supporters.
Its definitely cool that well be playing across the line from each other for four years, Schmidt said. We have a good friendship so Im excited to play him.
The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Schmidt, a free safety and wingback for the Wizards, could line up at wide receiver for the Grizzlies his freshman season. The 6-foot-2, 211-pound Miller, an inside linebacker for the Wizards, will play the same position for the Mavericks. Hell also be a long snapper in college.
Schmidt had a breakout season as a sophomore for the Wizards and carried those skills on offense and defense through the state-championship season his senior year. He rushed the ball for 579 yards (6.43 per carry) and 11 touchdowns and scored six more times on pass receptions catching 16 passes for 296 yards. Schmidt also had 54 tackles and two interceptions from his free safety position.
The leading scorer for Windsors basketball team, Schmidt is an all-around athlete who loved what Adams State had to offer.
The coaches were great and they were so good to me. Its going to be hard giving up basketball, but I really love football, said Schmidt, who also considered South Dakota and Colorado School of Mines. The facilities were great. I bet its one of the best facilities in all of Division II. Everyone Ive talked to thats graduated from there has had a high job placement, so its a great education.
Schmidt said he might go into pre-law at Adams State.
Schmidt said the Grizzlies graduated three of their top receivers and the coaches told him he could step in and play right away.
They said theyre not going to hand it to me, but if I work hard enough and I impress them I dont have to redshirt, Schmidt said.
Its the next step. I was always known in Windsor. Im a no name up there now. I feel like I have to improve myself. I want people to know who I am.
Going out as a state champion is what Schmidt said Miller worked on for four years.
Our dream was to win a state championship, and all the time we put in the summer, all the late nights of film all paid off, Schmidt said. Ill be getting my state championship ring in about four weeks.
Miller, a two-year starter for the Wizards, led the stingy defense in tackles (151). Not only did Miller average 10.8 tackles per game for the 13-1 Wizards, but he also had four sacks.
Miller said he realized he could play in college after going to some football camps last summer.
I realized I could play up there, and next thing I know Im getting a scholarship, said Miller, who plans to major in engineering.
Miller said he thinks hell fit in well with the Mavericks defense because they run the same defensive scheme as the Wizards.
Miller was all over the field for the Wizards this past season.
I think a lot of it was just how fast our team was. I was able to get to the ball, said Miller, who said he was being looked at by most of the RMAC schools as well as being a preferred walk-on at Wyoming and Colorado State University. Our D-line was great up front giving us linebackers holes to run through. I just got to the ball at the right time.
Miller is looking forward to playing against Schmidt.
I think it will be fun to play against each other and to be able to talk to each other after the game just to know both of us got to the next level: Miller said.
Playing at the collegiate level excites Miller. It gets me all jazzed up. I cant wait for training camp, Miller said. It was great going out with a bang winning a state championship. They even said at Mesa that theyre recruiting guys that come out of winning programs.
Wizards head football coach Chris Jones said he sees great things for Schmidt since hell be able to focus on one sport.
Hes so good athletically. Hes a competitive guy. I dont think hes been tapped yet because hes so busy playing other sports, Jones said. Once he gets through some conditioning and training with those guys where hes going to be in a routine for a while, I think he can be a real special football player at that level. Hes going to get bigger, stronger, faster. I see him being a really potent big receiver out there if thats where they put him at. I think hes going to play a major role for them.
Jones said Miller is one of those all-in kids.
He didnt miss anything for four years. He said, I want to be a football player and thats what he did, Jones said.He plays with a lot of intensity in practice. Hes a complete mental player. As the year went on for us, he was able to run out there and make plays. Hes going to a school that runs the same base defense. Hes going to be able to fit in right away. I know hes going to redshirt, but hes going to have the opportunity to have an impact his first year hes eligible. Also, hes one of the best long snappers weve ever seen, and there is a potential for that at the next level beyond that.
