LeRoy Ball has never been to his partys caucus before, but this year, with a presidential race in the balance, that will change.
Were going to go, the 74-year-old Greeley Republican said. It will be interesting to hear what they have to say, and then Ill make my decisions on who Ill be voting for.
Republicans across Colorado will head to caucus sites on Tuesday night for the partys caucus. Colorado and Minnesota both hold caucuses Tuesday.
In Weld County, always a Republican stronghold, party chairwoman Karen Pelzer said she expects a high turnout from energized party members.
We have planned for 5,000, she said. Weld is a heavily Republican county, and weve experienced heavy turnout in the past.
During the precinct caucuses, delegates to the county conventions are elected. At the county conventions, delegates to the state and congressional district conventions are elected, and then 36 delegates are selected to go the Republican National Convention, held this year in Tampa, Fla. Republicans also will hold a presidential preference poll. The caucus is only open to Republicans.
GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney, coming off a win Saturday in Nevada, will look to maintain his position of strength, if not build upon it, as his rivals continue working to derail him even as their options for doing so narrow with each victory he notches.
Rick Santorum and Ron Paul both campaigned outside of Nevada and instead focused on Colorado and Minnesota. Paul visited northern Colorado last week, and Santorum made several stops in the state, including a visit to Greeley on Saturday for the Weld GOPs Lincoln Day Dinner, during which he called Colorado a key state. Newt Gingrich, who finished second in Nevada, insisted he plans to stay in the race.
Ball said he hasnt made up his mind about which candidate hell support, though he has narrowed it to two candidates. He didnt want to say which two he would support. He said the negative campaigning that has characterized the race for the Republican nomination so far has bothered him.
I dont like the fact that theyre fighting amongst themselves, he said. Lets get down to issues. Thats whats going to be important.
Ball said he will, of course, ultimately support whichever Republican wins the nomination.
Pelzer said there is a strong sense of excitement among Weld Republicans about the 2012 election. As an example, she pointed to a robo call the party made to the countys Republicans reminding them about Tuesdays caucus.
Our phones literally lit up at headquarters, she said. It was a phenomenal response that we got about that call.
Colorado Democrats will hold their caucuses on March 6.
