The Greeley Central and Windsor wrestling teams maintained their late-season success Friday afternoon in the first day of the Class 4A Region 4 Wrestling Tournament at Longmont High School.
The Wizards, ranked No. 1 in 4A and defending state champions, advanced 11 wrestlers into this mornings semifinal round at 9 a.m., while scoring 116 points.
Greeley Central has 10 wrestlers in the semifinals, and is in second place with 101 points, followed by Discovery Canyon with 92 to round out the top three.
The first two rounds dont say a whole lot, but were really looking forward to today, Windsor coach Monte Trusty said. All of our kids wrestled real well today.
Greeley Centrals Eric Penfold was equally pleased with his teams performance, indicating the Wildcats have maintained the momentum they possessed in the last month of the regular season with back-to-back-to-back victories over Broomfield, Thompson Valley and Class 5A Greeley West.
The Wizards and Wildcats will go head-to-head in semifinal action at 126 pounds where Greeley Centrals Zach Badial (32-10) will take on Windsors Seth Villa (19-6).
Badial, a senior, recorded a pin and major decision on Friday, while Villa opened with a pin and a technical fall over Silver Creeks Danny Bishop (20-9).
In another key semifinal matchup, Greeley Central sophomore Donovan Alirez (20-5) will face Windsors Josh Donkle (39-5, ranked No. 2).
One of Fridays highlights included a 17-15 victory by Greeley Central senior 170-pounder Aldo Lara over Longmonts Forrest Wetterstrom that included a scoring spree in the final minute, resulting in a reversal, near-fall and a penalty point for Lara after Wetterstrom was penalized for throwing a punch.
It was pretty wild, Penfold said. Lara kept his cool, got his points and the victory, which was impressive.
In other All-Weld semifinal matchups, Greeley Centrals Erik Guerrero (33-6) will take on Fort Lupton senior Jordan LaRoche (20-3) at 132 pounds; and Fort Lupton senior Timmy Ornelas (No. 1-ranked, 33-3) will take on Greeley Central senior Austin Mahaffey (21-17) at 220 pounds.

The Spartans received needed points from a pair of lower-weight wrestlers as freshman Anthony Garza (36-7) advanced to the semifinals at 106 pounds with a pin over Libertys Alec Dowell (1:07) in the first round and a 16-1 technical fall over Heritages Nick Mamigonian in a quarterfinal match.
At 126 pounds, No. 1-ranked Emilio Martinez (30-4) won his only match of the day, a 21-5 technical fall over Mountain Vistas Joe Huber.
Other semifinalists for the Spartans are 138-pounder Shedrick Boyd, who scored a pair of technical falls; and No. 2-ranked junior Austin Waterman, who pinned Heritages Austin Atwell in 1:17 in his quarterfinal match to run his record to 38-1.

Trujillo spent a total of 65 seconds on the mat during two matches Friday, earning two quick pins.
Eaton senior Jaden Olearnick (28-3) earned a 17-second pin in the quarterfinals to pave the way for a semifinals match with Valley junior Everett Collins (21-11).
Vikings senior Walker Gonzales (34-8) will take on Eaton sophomore Riley Jones (22-8) at 195.
The 220 semifinals feature all Weld wrestlers. Highland junior Keaton Sameshima (29-6) faces Platte Valley senior Jesus Aguayo (15-11) while Valleys Austin Ramos (24-12) matches up with Eatons Dalton Shoop (27-4).
At 285, Platte Valley junior Raul Rios (25-5) faces Vikings junior Roy Mendez (22-14).
