GIRLS HOOPS
STRASBURG Eaton clinched its second straight Class 3A Patriot League title and its third in four years with a 60-37 win against Strasburg on Friday. The Reds (10-0 Patriot, 17-1 overall) led 18-4 after the first quarter, extending the lead to 38-14 at halftime.
The girls did a nice job with their intensity, Eaton coach Todd Hernandez said. Coming in, we knew Strasburg was well-coached and they would be ready to play.
Unfortunately for the Reds, they didnt escape the game completely unscathed. Eaton junior forward Carly Jurgensmeier suffered what Hernandez said appeared to be a serious injury to her left knee in the second half. Hernandez said he didnt yet know the exact extent of the injury.
Jurgensmeier is averaging 4.5 points, 4.7 rebounds per game.
On a more positive note, Hernandez said his team appears to be building momentum entering the postseason. The Reds have won 11 straight games with one more league game left, Tuesday at Platte Valley.
(Winning league) was one of our goals at the start of the year, Hernandez said. That obviously puts us in a good position for the district tournament (starting Friday) and puts us in a good spot to hopefully host regionals (on March 2-3).
