In case you had to do a double take, that is a new logo on the Windsor-Severance Re-4 School Districts website home page, letterhead, envelopes and other items.
Created by Fort Collins resident Dan Seese, who owns a sign company in Fort Collins, the logo contains four swashes to simulate crops that arch over the Weld RE connecting to the 4.
I had some staff members come forward and they shared that they felt our logo needed to be refreshed and updated, Re-4 superintendent Karen Trusler said. So, they researched and collaborated with the designer, and they all came to a consensus on the logo that you see now. Its a nice logo. I like it.
The former logo was an oval 4 that included a photo of the administration building and the districts vision of Foundation 4 Success, Education 4 Life and Citizens 4 the Future. The new logo includes a font that is a replica of the lettering carved into the base of ancient Roman columns.
Sherry Hoffman, the executive assistant to the superintendent/board of education, said the total cost for the redesign and rights to the logo was $1,145.
We went through several design revisions over several weeks time and settled on this one as it tells the best story of who we are, Hoffman said.
Sees is no stranger to Windsor-Severance schools. He created the logo for the Range View Elementary School Trailblazers in Severance and also created and designed the hawk flying on the wall in the Severance Middle School gymnasium.
I do logos for a number of different types of companies. School districts? This might have been the first one Ive done for a school district, Sees said. After meeting with Sherry, I just tried to get a feel for what they were trying to achieve because Windsor has got such a long history, and we wanted to keep it traditional in a sense but also be able to show that theyre progressive and prepared for the 21st century. We worked on it back and forth for several weeks.
Sees, 59, said he didnt know what kind of logo the district was looking for going into the meetings.
To tell you the truth, at first I had no idea, Sees said. Sometimes when I meet with someone I know kind of off the bat, but I didnt really know what to do with it because there were a number of words that needed to be included, the 4 needed to be prominent. I came up with probably six to 10 thumbnail sketches. One of the things I ended up doing was trying to bring in the rural history by putting in the rows of crops on a hillside sort of encompassing the whole district that came around and tied into the 4, and then do it in a way that was contemporary.
Sees said a logo such as the Re-4 one is something that people should feel some ownership in.
This particular logo, they didnt want it associated with a school because its kind of the business end of things, and yet still wanted it to be friendly and accessible, Sees said. I think it needs to be something that people can feel some connection to and feel some pride in. Its a pretty diverse district with the ongoing rural history and sophisticated technologies and land development that is also part of the community. Its a little difficult because it isnt strictly urban or strictly rural. I think it needs to be something that has a strong identification and is easily recognizable that when you see it, it reads graphically and not just with the words.
