As the new buds emerge on trees and we begin to hear the familiar chirping of birds, the promise of spring and new life fills us with hope. This time can be bittersweet for those who have lost a loved one. My own father died last year, and so many who knew him or only knew of him offered words of condolence. The end of his life was peaceful, and his passing really became a celebration of his remarkable life. My father died at home, surrounded by those who loved him.
That was thanks to a wonderful group of people at Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado. This nonprofit hospice started as a group of volunteers caring for our loved ones thirty years ago. They offer medical care, in addition to support for family members of those who are facing the end of life. And they need our help. The proposed Medicare budget includes cuts to hospice of up to 15 percent.
Back in the 1980s, our government found that hospice care was a worthwhile cause for federal funding, and hospices became certified to receive reimbursement from Medicare. Hospice provides vital care to those in need, while saving our government money. However, there aren't enough Medicare dollars to go around.
Hospice offers the services and support that families want when coping with life-limiting illness. A Gallup Poll commissioned by the National Hospice Organization found that nine out of 10 Americans, if faced with a terminal illness, would want to remain in their homes and receive the services that hospice provides. In fact, more than 80 percent of hospice care in the United States is provided in the home. In addition, Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado also cares for those who are without health insurance or medical benefits.
Please join me in supporting those who care for our terminally ill friends and family. Make a donation to Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado, 2726 11th St. Road, Greeley, CO 80634. Help ensure that quality hospice care is available to all for years to come.
