NO INJURIES IN CAR VERSUS TRAIN CRASH

At 10:41 p.m. Feb. 5, police were called to a car vs. train non-injury crash at Eastman Park Drive and Weld County Road 23. A switchman for Great Western Railroad said he was in the process of coupling segments of train cars when the crash occurred. He said the train was completely stopped across the roadway with numerous black tank railcars, and turned around when he heard the boom of the collision. A 25-year-old man from Fort Collins crashed into the train. The driver told police he just got off work at Vestas and was driving westbound on Eastman Park Drive to go home. He told police that he didn’t see the train until it was too late to stop his 1997 Saturn, and then as he hit his brakes he slid on the slick roadway. The man estimated his speed at 40 mph in the posted 45 mph zone. The man was issued a county summons for careless driving and for failure to provide proof of insurance upon request. The man said he wasn’t injured. The Saturn sustained extreme damage to the front, and the railcar sustained visible damage to a platform.

MAN FOUND SLEEPING IN CHURCH A NO-NO: At 6:59 a.m. Feb. 6, police were called to 561 E. Garden Drive regarding a man sleeping in a church building. The reporting party told police he had observed for a week a man looking like he just woke up, walk out of the building and go to his pickup. As police walked through the main entrance of the church, they observed a man sleeping on a row of chairs. Police told the man, 54, that it was a crime to sleep in the building due to building codes. The man told police he had permission to sleep in the church from the pastor. Police advised the man not to sleep in the building any longer and he said he wouldn’t.
