Kent and Sharon Hixson’s new mobile dog grooming service brings their canine “spa-on-wheels” right to their customers’ driveways.
The couple began their new business, Good Dog Mobile Grooming, as the second cycle of their careers. Sharon is a retired art teacher for Greeley-Evans School District 6 and Kent worked as the manager of the Fort Collins Nursery for 35 years.
“We’ve been married nine years and we were looking to find something we could do together,” Kent said. “We obviously love dogs and I’ve always been a people person. This fit right into what we were thinking.”
The couple said the business serves customers in Windsor, Fort Collins, Loveland and west Greeley, but hopes to focus specifically on Windsor customers in the future.
“It’s a great service for busy pet owners,” Sharon said. “It’s great for people in retirement communities or young mothers or people that work from home. It’s so much more convenient.”
After retiring from teaching, Sharon went to dog grooming school and became certified with the Colorado Department of Agriculture and the National Pet Groomers Association.
The couple found a special dog grooming van for sale in California. They flew out to pick up the van and drive it back and began grooming dogs last month.
“Everything is hands on and one-on-one with the dog,” Kent said. “We don’t have other dogs sitting in kennels, waiting to be groomed, like you’d see at other groomers. They are at home, so they are calmer, which is good because the grooming experience can be stressful. We try to alleviate that stress.”
Good Dog specializes in small, medium and large dogs, “but not extra-large dogs,” Kent said.
“We just did two Dobermans. That’s about as large as we can go,” Sharon said.
The couple pulls the van up to their customer’s home and brings the dog inside, where they inspect the dog’s coat and trim the dog’s nails and pads. Then, they wash the dog in a warm bath with a sudzer, which penetrates the coat with shampoo and massages the dog.
After hand-drying the dog, the coat is styled and furminated to loosen the coat and get rid of excess hair. They can also clean the dog’s ears and brush their teeth.
Sharon said the business has a variety of different products and techniques they are able to tailor to the specific breed and their coat.
Services include a simple bath and brush, as well as a full grooming option, and rates start at $65. Appointments take about two hours, depending on the dog, she said.
“It depends on the dog and their coat,” Sharon said. “Smaller dogs obviously take less time than dogs with a lot of coat, which take longer to dry.”
Good Dog schedules appointments from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, but do make appointments outside of normal hours. To schedule an appointment, call the business at (970) 460-9119.
