Windsor Tree Board 2014 tree sale underway

Are you getting tired of this seemingly endless winter weather and wishing for spring? There is something you can do now — look at your yard and imagine where a new tree would look good. Surely there is a spot that could use a tree to shade the house, improve the view or enhance the beauty of the landscape.

The Town of Windsor Tree Board and the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is offering a selection of 10 tree species with varying mature sizes proven to do well in the Windsor area. Trees are for sale at very reasonable prices and will be available for pick-up on Saturday, April 26.

The trees range from small species such as Spring Snow Crabapple, China Snow Tree Lilac, and Hot Wings Tatarian Maple, to larger growing species such as Bur Oak, Turkish Filbert, and Skyline Honeylocust. Medium-sized trees are Chanticleer Pear, Goldenraintree, and Hedge Maple.

The prices are $40 for bare-root specimens and $50 for those that are balled and burlapped.

Featured tree species include:

» The Spring Snow Crabapple is desirable because it does not produce fruit which in other crabapples often causes a mess. It is also only slightly susceptible to fireblight.

» Chanticleer Pear is adaptable to many soil types, producing only a pea-sized fruit which is attractive to birds. The leaves turn a beautiful red-purple color in the fall and it is resistant to fireblight.

» Hot Wings Tatarian Maple is a small tree which produces bright red seeds (samaras). It was selected as a Plant Select® plant by CSU and Denver Botanic Gardens.

» The China Snow Tree Lilac is an interesting small tree which produces white flower masses after its leaves have emerged in spring.

For more information about the tree sale or to place your order, visit the Windsor Recreation Center, 250 N. 11th Street, or online at www.windsorgov.com/treesale/.

Orders will be taken through April 23.
