WHS SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW: Senior leadership a big plus for Windsor girls golfers

COACH: Whitney Davis (3rd season)

LAST YEAR: Third place in the Class 4A Tri-Valley Conference. No one qualified for state.

KEY GOLFERS: Samantha Black, sr.; Sylvia Renfroe, sr.; Shelby Nelson, sr.; Sarah McWilliams, so.; Lauren Gustafson, so.

DID YOU KNOW? Black was voted second team all-conference last season.

DAVIS’ COMMENTS: “I look for us to have another top-three finish in our conference this year. I’m excited to have the senior leadership. The outlook and the attitude already this season is so positive. I feel that our five is going to be pretty solid for us, and I also have some youth and I have some juniors and some other sophomores that are going to work into the rotation. I expect Samantha to be in the 90s, which could potentially qualify her for state. I expect Sylvia maybe to get down into the 80s this season. With the quality of swing that she has and the potential that she has, I see her being in the 80s. Shelby, I think, could break 100 for the first time. Ultimately, our goal will be to have them peaking around regional time.

You can’t say enough about senior leadership (Black, Renfroe and Nelson) because it sets the atmosphere for your whole team. They really just set the tone for the season as far as attitudes go. What I like about having those three senior leaders is they’re just bringing positive team atmosphere and great team unity. As long as they’re having fun, they’re going to play better on the course and I’m looking forward to seeing that this year.

This year in the Tri-Valley we changed the girls’ format where we can take five and score three. In the past years, it was always take four and score three. By switching to this format, it’s going to give a lot of the girls more playing experience. That helps me out as a coach because I can get more girls in there and give more girls a chance to shine and step up and play well.”

SEASON OUTLOOK: Davis, a four-time state qualifier when she played prep golf at Mountain View High School in Loveland and who played Division I golf at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, loves the depth on her squad starting with the three seniors. The Wizards have enough talent to send some golfers to the state tournament. Renfroe missed last season with a back injury, but expect to see her come back strong this season.
