Weld County jail inmate dies after apparent suicide attempt

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a jail inmate, which authorities believe is a suicide.

Barton James Grubbs, 52, of Montrose died at North Colorado Medical Center on Friday, according to the Weld County Coroner’s Office.

Grubbs had been arrested Thursday by the Colorado State Patrol and booked into Weld County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence and several non-moving traffic violations, according to Weld sheriff’s office arrest records.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Deputy Shane Scofield said the investigation into the death still is ongoing, but authorities believe the man likely tried to kill himself. Scofield said he did not know whether the man was on a suicide watch when he killed himself.
