First Greeley oil and gas forum set for Monday

Monday will mark the beginning of a series of forums on oil and gas activity in what some would call an unconventional alliance among local developers, environmentalists, academics and government officials.

The city of Greeley, The Tribune, Weld Air and Water, Synergy Resources, KUNC, the University of Northern Colorado and Mineral Resources have partnered with the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Center of the American West to host three FrackingSENSE forums, the first of which begins Monday with a discussion on drilling practices and an overview of the issues.

Patty Limerick, faculty director at Center of the American West, who has been hosting similar forums in Boulder, said the discussions will seek an evidence-based conversation on what experts know, what they don’t know, and what they hope to learn.

Panelists will include the likes of academics from the Colorado School of Mines, CU and the Colorado School of Public Health, government officials from the EPA, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and Gunnison County, industry officials from BP and WPX Energy, and a representative from Western Resource Advocates.

Two more panels will follow Monday’s kickoff. One will focus on the risks of drilling and air quality, and the third will examine the regulatory environment for oil and gas.

CU is one of nine institutions participating in a five-year, $12 million grant to maximize the benefits of natural gas and minimize its negative impacts. The Center of the American West is charged with public outreach, and Limerick said she felt Greeley, with its history of drilling in city limits, would provide a productive platform for expanding the program.

The forums come at a time when city officials say they hope to convene a community dialogue on oil and gas.
