Town's strategic plan gets a little Broncos magic

Windsor’s strategic plan might have gotten a little bit of Broncos magic last weekend when current and former players stopped in town as part of its 2014 Salute to Fans Tour.

Town Clerk Patti Garcia and Town Management Assistant Kelly Unger stood in line April 14 outside of Windsor Town Hall with a copy of the town’s strategic plan, hoping to get the team to sign it.

“Maybe it will bring a little Broncos magic while we’re working on it,” Garcia said.

More than 150 people had lined up outside town hall before the event began at 1 p.m.

Windsor residents Taylor Lockwood and Nicole Fry were the first in line, carrying pennants and jerseys for the players to sign.

“My grandpa has season tickets and we get to go to a game every year,” Fry said.

When the Broncos bus arrived to a cheering crowd, current players Mitch Unrein, Malik Jackson and Virgil Green greeted the crowd with a wave. They were joined by former Broncos David Treadwell, Ken Lanier and Dave Studdard, as well as two cheerleaders.

Sisters Patsi and Marci Santillanes said they came down from Fort Collins to see the players on the team they’ve been fans of since the 60s.

“It was awesome,” Marci Santillanes said. “We got to see Treadwell and some of the older guys who practiced in Greeley.”

Patsi Santillanes added that the event was well worth the trip from Fort Collins.

Miles the Broncos’ Mascot also made an appearance at the event, shaking hands and taking photos with the crowd as they waited in line.

“The draw for us was the Broncos, obviously,” said Windsor resident Mike Lucero, who stood near his 4-year-old son and his friend. “For these guys, Miles was the draw.”

The team’s Salute to Fans Tour stopped in 20 Colorado cities between April 14 and April 19. Before the Windsor event, the team stopped in Fort Collins and, after Windsor’s event, the team stopped in Greeley.

“It’s great to see all the community spirit and pride,” Garcia said.

“It was awesome. We got to see Treadwell and some of the older guys who practicied in Greeley.
