Holocaust memorial observance week and events in Greeley start Monday

The “Voices from the Holocaust: Transcending the Holocaust” memorial observance week in Greeley begins Monday.

The week will include book readings, movie screenings and guest speakers through April 27 with a closing service held that evening.

The purpose of the observance is to remind the community of the anti-Semitism that affected a generation of people throughout Europe, according to the event’s website.

The scheduled events aim to educate community members on how to prevent hatred and prejudice in today’s society.

The programs will focus on the struggles of the Jewish people and other persecuted groups in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945.

The weekly event schedule is as follows:

Monday

» Read-in from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Michener Library on the University of Northern Colorado’s west campus in Greeley

» Discussion of the book “Transcending Darkness” by Estelle Laughlin from 6-8 p.m. at Centennial Branch Library, 2227 23rd Ave., Greeley

Tuesday

» Holocaust survivor Estelle Laughlin will speak at 10 a.m. at Windsor Charter Academy, 690 Academy Ct., Windsor

» Reading of the “Litany of the Martyrs” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University Center Fireside Lounge on the corner of 20th Street and 11th Avenue, Greeley

» Holocaust survivor Estelle Laughlin will speak at 1:30 p.m. at Greeley Central High School, 1515 14th Ave., Greeley

» Movie screening of “The Book Thief” at 4:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Kress Cinema, 817 8th Ave. Greeley. For the 4:15 p.m. show, call (970) 674-5020 and for the 7:30 p.m. show, call (970) 339-6225.
