Windsor FFA on its way to state convention

Since January, members of the Windsor FFA have been hard at work practicing for Career Development Events.

On April 2, the Windsor FFA Chapter took six teams to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling to compete in District CDEs. Three of the six teams — Farm Business Management, Crops, and Agriculture Mechanics — took first place. The Floriculture team placed second overall, with Rachel Wildman taking first individually within the district and Rachel Winter taking second. Dairy Judging took second in the region, only behind the first-place team by eight points. The Windsor FFA Meats Judging Team also took first place at District CDEs.

With the successes of the teams as a motivation, they will be buckling down and practicing hard for State CDEs. State CDEs will be held at Colorado State University on Monday. Following the calculation of results, the awards ceremony will be held in Moby Arena for the first time ever. Teams that win the state competition will move on to the national competition at the FFA National Convention held in Louisville, Ky., in the fall.

Also coming up in May is the annual Windsor FFA Chapter banquet held at Windsor High School on May 15. At the banquet, students will be presented with Greenhand and Chapter Degrees, as well as Star Member Awards. The members will be recognized for their achievements in their CDEs, as well as their successes with their Supervised Agricultural Experiences. Along with the recognition of the year’s achievements, the new chapter officer team will be installed for the 2014-15 school year.

Following the end of the school year, students will be able to attend the Colorado State FFA Convention in Alamosa. At state convention, members will be recognized for their proficiency applications at the state level. The speakers that moved on from November’s District Speaking Contest will have the opportunity to compete at state convention to move onto the national competition next fall.

There will also be an Agriscience fair that Windsor FFA members will be competing in. Toward the end of the convention, members who have earned their Chapter Degrees and have put in a great amount of time and effort into their SAEs will be awarded their State Degrees. There are also two members of the Windsor FFA Chapter who are running for a state office. As the final semester of the 2013-14 school year comes to an end, the Windsor FFA will be hard at work to demonstrate their hard-earned skills to the Windsor community and Colorado.
