Windsor Middle School student qualifies for national talent competition in Los Angeles

Alecia Marquardt, an aspiring entertainer and Windsor Middle School student, competed in the iPop Talent Competition on April 27 in Broomfield and earned a chance to move on to the national competition in Los Angeles next January.

Alecia, who just turned 12, competed and qualified in the event’s four categories: singing, acting, dancing and modeling.

“She did great,” Denise Marquardt, Alecia’s mom, said. “Kids usually focus on one or two categories, but they wanted her for all four.”

Alecia has always been drawn to the stage, getting involved in singing and acting from a young age, her mom said.

“She has always been theatrical since the time she was little. She sang before she could even talk,” Denise Marquardt said. “It’s all she’s ever wanted to do.”

Alecia has sang in the Greeley Children’s Chorale for four years, sings in her school’s choir and plays the cello in orchestra.

She is also a student at Fort Collins’ Beth Studio, where she takes singing and guitar lessons. She has performed around town at open mic nights and at the Windsor Gardener.

Before the regional competition in Broomfield, Alecia first had to pass the local tryouts.

“There were about 250 kids and they chose 12 to go to regionals,” Denise Marquardt said. “At regionals there were about 60 kids and they said they picked 20 percent to move on.”

Alecia said she sang the songs “Someone Like You,” by Adele, and “Hallelujah, “ originally by Leonard Cohen, during the singing portion of the event. She said she isn’t much of a dancer, but had help from a friend to come up with her routine for the competition.

After performing in Broomfield, Alecia got her call back later that night.

Now, Alecia and her mom aren’t sure if they’ll be able to afford the trip to Los Angeles, but they have until January to try and raise the funds. Alecia said her mom plans to put a donation jar in her store, My Favorite Things, located at 414 Main St.
