Xcel Energy to hold open house in Windsor on new substation for future energy needs

Xcel Energy will host an open house Thursday in Windsor to discuss a new substation and transmission line project, which is being proposed to help meet future energy and power quality needs in Windsor, Severance, Timnath and other nearby communities.

The meeting will be from 5-7 p.m. at the Windsor Community Recreation Center, 250 N 11th St.

Xcel is proposing to construct the Avery Substation and Transmission Line project, which would consist of:

» A new electric distribution substation.

» An associated overhead double-circuit 230,000-volt (230-kV) electric transmission line.

» Overhead distribution feeder lines near the towns of Windsor, Severance and Timnath.

Construction is expected to start summer of 2016 and the project is expected to be completed and in service May 2017.

Xcel has said its system in this area, as it exists today, does not have the capability to reliably serve the additional growth anticipated for the future, and additional substation facilities will be required to deliver the electricity to the load centers where energy needs are the greatest.

The new substation will enable Xcel Energy to serve existing and new customers in the vicinity of Timnath, Severance and Windsor, caused by growth of these communities along the Interstate 25 corridor.

The substation will assist in providing backup to the existing Cobb Lake and Windsor substations, which are reaching their capacity. It also will provide reliability to Xcel Energy’s existing and future customer load.

Power for the new 230-kV transmission line will be provided by interconnecting the existing Platte River Power Authority’s (PRPA) Timberline-Ault 230-kV transmission line. Xcel Energy is evaluating alternatives for this interconnection. This connection will supply the Avery Substation with the electrical supply needed to power the distribution feeders serving the immediate communities.

The substation will occupy about 4 acres and contain an equipment enclosure, transformer, capacitor bank and switches to support the distribution feeders.
