Xcel Energy to build new substation for future energy needs

Xcel Energy is looking to build a new substation and transmission line project to help meet the future energy needs of Windsor, Severance, Timnath and other nearby communities.

Xcel representatives held an informational meeting Thursday at the Community Recreation Center to discuss the new project, which is scheduled to be in service in May 2017.

The company’s preferred site for the new substation is on the Weld-Larimer county line, northwest of Windsor and east of the Timnath Reservoir, Xcel spokesman Mark Stutz said. Stutz said the location isn’t final and Xcel will consider other sites through the process.

Xcel hasn’t yet released a cost estimate for the project, as it’s still in its early stages, Stutz said.

The substation and transmission line project will include:

» A new electric distribution substation.

» An associated overhead double-circuit 230,000-volt electric transmission line.

» Overhead distribution feeder lines near the towns of Windsor, Severance and Timnath.

Construction is expected to start summer of 2016, Stutz said.

The substation will occupy about four acres and contain an equipment enclosure, transformer, capacitor bank and switches to support the distribution feeders.

Xcel has said its current system for the area won’t be able to reliably serve the future growth anticipated for the area. The new substation will enable Xcel Energy to serve customers in and around Timnath, Severance and Windsor.

The substation also will provide backup to the existing Cobb Lake and Windsor substations, which are reaching their capacity, according to a news release from the company.

Power for the new transmission line will be provided by interconnecting the existing Platte River Power Authority’s (PRPA) Timberline-Ault transmission line, however, Xcel is still evaluating alternatives for this interconnection. This connection will supply the Avery Substation with the electrical supply needed to power the distribution feeders serving the nearby communities.
