GOOD FOR YOU: Windsor students to show off fishing skills at nationals in Tennessee

Two Windsor students, who are the 2014 Colorado State Team champions from the Windsor High School Bass Fishing Club, will be competing at Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tenn., from Monday through Saturday at the BASS National High School Team Championships.

Bailey Smith and Josh Villa will be fishing at the championship against 100-plus high school teams from around the country. The WHS Bass club will also send Villa to the TBF (The Bass Federation) Junior World Championships on Lake Wateree in South Carolina from Aug. 14-16.

Smith and Villa competed at the BASS High School Colorado State Team Championship in May 2013 and won the championship and a chance to go to the 2014 National Tournament. This past May, several Windsor High School Bass Fishing Club members competed in both the high school team event and the junior individual event, where Villa won the Colorado State Championship in the 15-18 division and a chance to go to the 2014 TBF Junior World Championship and compete against others of the same age group from around the world.

The next Colorado BASS High School State Team Championship will be held Aug. 10 at Pueblo Reservoir in Pueblo.

The WHS Bass Fishing Club recently had its first fundraiser called the Big Bass Challenge.

“It was a seven-hour open bass fishing tournament so anyone with a boat could fish it, and they had a weigh-in each hour,” said Frank Villa, CBN Youth Director BASS Colorado State Team. “Each team was allowed to bring in one bass each hour to have weighed. We had 15 boats with 30 anglers at Boyd Lake and it was a great success. The participants want to do another one this fall, but we will see. We have 16 members in the club, but because of work and various reasons not all could be there.”
