COACH: Phil Weiser (12th season as head coach)
LAST YEAR: Last year the team finished second in the Class 4A Tri-Valley Conference with a record of 10-5-1.
“It was a little disappointing to finish second, because we won conference the previous three years,” Weiser said. “We had a strong performance at State despite being knocked out in the first round by Evergreen. It was a heck of a game.”
KEY PLAYERS: Senior midfielder Noah McKenzie was the team’s second-leading scorer last year and the team will look to him to score and create goals this season. Senior defender Nick Bosso is a team leader and helps solidify back line, Weiser said. Senior Andrew Lind is a good center-midfield player who does a good job of holding the team together, Weiser said. Senior forward Jesse Waddell is another returning player that the team will be looking to for goals.
DID YOU KNOW? This year’s team is senior-heavy, with eight seniors on the squad.
“All eight are contributors on field, and they’re all big parts of what we do,” Weiser said. “We have a lot of experience on the team this year.”
SEASON OUTLOOK: The team’s first priority is to winning the Tri-Valley Conference, Weiser said.
“We have qualified for state every year but once since I’ve been here, and the farthest we’ve made it is the quarter finals,” Weiser said. “I think we’re replacing some key seniors from last year, but we have a great group of athletes on this team — lot of kids willing to learn and improve.”
WEISER’S COMMENTS: “We’ve been practicing about three days a week since June for the most part. We officially started two weeks ago, and we’re focusing on getting the fitness up and being more cohesive as team, but I think we’ve had good practices so far. Our first game is Aug. 28 against Frederick. It’s a conference game to start off the year. It would be great to get people out to there cheer us on.
