WINDSOR — In 1982, Marla Guzzo took her first hot air balloon ride on a whim while visiting a festival in New Mexico. At the time, the 21-year-old Guzzo didn’t hesitate when she was offered to fill an extra seat on a hot air balloon.
She doesn’t regret that decision for a moment and that’s why at the crack of dawn on Saturday, Guzzo donned her hot air balloon earrings and drove her balloon crew from Niwot to unload in the chilly air, damp grass and fog that came with Saturday’s first rays of light. After many years of being a passenger, the recently licensed Guzzo would have the chance to pilot a hot air balloon at the Windsor balloon launch.
The launch kicked off the first day of the Labor Day Weekend Windsor Harvest Festival. The three-day celebration includes more balloon launches, kids rodeo on the Windsor beach, a barbecue, street dance, beer garden, amusement rides, horse-drawn carriage rides and the Labor Day parade.
The balloon launch drew about 500 people to watch the balloons ascend.
