GOOD FOR YOU: New benches spruce up downtown Windsor thanks to Downtown Development Authority

Fifteen new black benches are giving visitors to the Windsor downtown area some additional places to sit and relax thanks to the efforts of the Windsor Downtown Development Authority beautification committee.

“There is a total of 15 benches and three trash cans. The ends are cast iron and the seats are steel,” said Elizabeth Fields, an associate planner for the town of Windsor who also serves as the staff liaison to the DDA board. “They’re spread out from 4th to 6th streets. They’re in the main stretch of downtown.”

Fields said the existing benches downtown were replaced with new benches for consistency purposes.

“There are seven new areas, and eight replacement benches,” Fields said.

The cost of the benches and trash cans was $17,495, and it came out of the DDA’s budget.

“It will hopefully make it more inviting. The DDA really wants to do whatever they can to make downtown more appealing for tourists and for existing Windsor residents to come down and spend the day and be able to relax and enjoy downtown,” Fields said. “Hopefully, they can keep working on making downtown better and better.”

DDA chairman Bob Winter is pleased with how the benches look.

“We did an inventory and thought this would be a nice amenity for downtown and give people a place to sit,” Winter said.

Winter said he gets ideas from other towns in Colorado.

“After being at Durango a year ago and I just got back from Golden, we learn from what they’re doing,” he said.

The benches are six feet in length.

“Three or four people can sit on them. These are going to last a long time. We wanted to stay with quality because we think Windsor has that kind of a reputation for quality and aesthetics. We liked the cast iron ends on them for longevity and steel seating,” Winter said. “Everything we try to do is long term. This is just the first step.”
