The Weld District Attorney’s Office on Monday filed assault and harassment charges against the Windsor Middle School principal who was arrested earlier this month.
Doug Englert , principal at the school since 1994, was arrested Nov. 8 on suspicion of punching his wife during an argument that allegedly took place two days earlier. He faces one count of second-degree assault , a felony, and one count of harassment , a misdemeanor. Both charges are designated as domestic violence-related.
An arrest affidavit states that Englert, 56 , is accused of punching his wife during an altercation in their home, leaving her with a broken rib. Police say the couple’s son was in the house at the time, but he was not injured.
The Windsor-Severance Re-4 District has placed Englert on paid administrative leave. Assistant principal/athletic director Eric Johnson is serving as acting principal.
Englert’s wife told police he has been physically abusive before, according to the affidavit. She said the two were arguing about who was supposed to pick up their son from a friend’s house. She said she punched Englert when he became aggressive, and he then punched her three times in the side.
When police arrested him, Englert told them he had punched her, but only because she had hit him first. Police asked him if he punched her out of self defense, and he told them he didn’t know.
Englert’s next scheduled court date is Dec. 18. He is released on bond.
