WHS WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW: Windsor wrestlers look to three-peat

Coach: Monte Trusty (5th season)

Last year: Windsor dominated Class 4A wrestling and brought home the state title for the second straight year at the Pepsi Center in Denver. The Wizards also went undefeated in dual meets and won their third straight regional title after finishing 23-0 on the season and 7-0 in league competition.

Key wrestlers: Joel Salomon, sr.; Jonathan Lewis, jr.; Cosme Martinez, sr.; Vinny Gonzales, sr.

Did you know? The team competes among some of the top teams nationally at meets in Texas in January and South Dakota next week, marking a dramatic rise in rankings over Trusty’s tenure.

Trusty’s comments: “These kids have dedicated themselves to training with a purpose and high-level goal at the end. The stuff that happens during the season is all a by-product of what happened the other eight months. (To be) a powerhouse – you can’t do that by opening the doors in November and closing the doors in February. Not going to happen. We seek out the highest level of competition – we go all across the country. We take our lumps all over and the come back to our little state of Colorado and it seems pretty good then. I just can’t wait to watch the guys compete. They’re ready to get a hold of somebody from a different school with a different colored singlet.”

Season outlook: Trusty was hesitant to describe Windsor as a current wrestling powerhouse, but he said the team is well on its way. “That’s definitely the goal, but I think we have a long ways to go before you can use that term,” he said. “That’s what we’re after though.” Being no stranger to state championships, the Wizards will look to Salomon, who Trusty described as one of the top wrestlers to come through the program — ever. If they can harness those powers of new and returning athletes, a title could very well come back to Windsor for the third straight year.

First match: The Wizard Duals on Saturday in Windsor got everyone’s feet wet ahead of tough matchups Friday and Saturday at the Rapid City Invitational in South Dakota.
