Area youth meet at roundtable discussion with Windsor mayor

Mayor John Vazquez faced the interrogation of a lifetime Monday as boys from Cub Scout Pack 57 peppered him with questions on topics ranging from oil drilling near their homes to if he “ever got a pay day” as mayor.

Juice boxes in hand and cookies to match, more than a dozen fourth-graders gathered in the Windsor Town Hall conference room and tamed their sugar highs to learn a thing or two about local government, life in the political spotlight and what they would have to do to run their own town — eventually.

Whether through recycling, community volunteering or serving in the armed forces locally or abroad, good citizenship was the takeaway message — a message that, based on the grins on kids and parents alike, resonated with everyone.

“You guys are future leaders,” Vazquez said. “You’re part of an organization that’s going to provide you opportunities to be leaders — to be innovators — to be pioneers. It’s true. It starts with small groups.”
