Windsor police discover thousands of dollars worth of marijuana in garage on Main Street

Windsor police discovered marijuana plants worth thousands of dollars inside a one-car garage on Main Street after officers smelled the weed following an unrelated traffic stop on Nov. 24.

The marijuana was located inside a garage behind a home located at 1305 Main St., next to the Dairy Queen and two blocks southwest of the police station.

David Thompson, 43, of Windsor, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful distribution, dispensing, sale or possession of a controlled substance and attempt to influence a public servant. The charges are class 3 and class 4 felonies.

Windsor police Chief John Michaels said police made a traffic stop at 6:44 p.m. Nov. 24 on a little road south of the Dairy Queen off Main Street.

“They pulled this car over, and they were within about 20 feet of a shed that’s on that property, and they’re talking to the driver of this car,” Michaels said. “They said, ‘We smell a tremendous amount of marijuana. What do you have in your car?’ ”

The driver told police it wasn’t coming from his car, and that he didn’t have any marijuana.

“They figured out that it was coming from the shed, coming out of the vents,” Michaels said.

Police went to the home, knocked on the door and talked to the owner.

“The owner denies that there is any illegal substance in that shed, so they secure the shed, they went and got a search warrant that night,” Michaels said.

Michaels said police found about 25 marijuana buds hanging and drying on a hanger, other piles of marijuana throughout the garage, about 25 plants from 2 inches to 6 feet tall, and 21 other plants.

“There was a substantial grow in that shed,” Michaels said. “This is not tied to medical marijuana.”

Michaels said one figure he heard on the value of the marijuana was about $9,000.

Thompson was transported to the Weld County Jail in Greeley, and the final charges will be determined by the Weld District Attorney’s Office.
