4 Windsor kids win bikes from Spokes

Spokes Inc. owner Dave Roberts held a bike-writing contest for kids in first through eighth grades and received 65 entrees this year.

Four kids were selected from the submissions to receive a mountain bike, valued at $350, from the shop. The students were asked to submit in writing why they liked to ride a bike or why they wanted a new bike.

The four winners included: Brycen Farris, third grade; Karlee Koessl, fourth grade; Ronny Minjarez, sixth grade and Alexandra Smith, sixth grade.

"The kids did a great job," Roberts said. "They did some really creative stuff. It was hard figuring out who should be the winners."

He said the judging involved some difficult decisions, as many of the kids' submissions were very creative and it was clear they had put a lot of time into them. He said Farris' submission stood out because of a poem about bicycling, set to the cadence of "The Night Before Christmas."

Roberts said this was the first year he held the contest and was able to do it because someone stepped forward and offered to help cover the cost of the bikes. He said he'd like to continue the contest in the future, but "it all depends on how business goes."

He said the contest benefits the kids by encouraging bicycling, which offers numerous advantages.

"The freedom of riding a bike, who doesn't remember that?" Roberts said. "Fresh air, free spirit, definitely the exercise and getting them outdoors. Windsor has a lot to offer, especially when it gets warmer."
