Students will have the chance to compete for gifts and prizes at 6 p.m. March 21 during the annual Windsor Optimist Club oratorical contest at the Windsor REA building.
Boys and girls under the age of 19 as of Dec. 31, 2012, are eligible, and they must prepare and present a speech four to five minutes in length on the topic of “Why My Voice is Important.”
According to a news release from the Optimist Club, all contestants will receive a gift plus prizes for the first two places in each age group.
Boys — eighth grade and under: 1st $50, 2nd $25
Boys — 9th grade and over: 1st $50, 2nd $25
Girls — eighth grade and under: 1st $50, 2nd $25
Girls — 9th grade and over: 1st $50, 2nd $25
The overall winner for all boys and all girls will advance to the northern Colorado zone competition. The winners of zone compete in May at the Colorado/Wyoming District Contest for a $2,500 college scholarship.
The application deadline is March 8, and there is a limit of the first 20 contestants who apply. If there are more than 20 applications, priority will be given to the earliest dates they were received and secondly to the older age contestant.
Applications are available at schools from designated teacher contacts, from select Optimist Club members or Google “Optimist Oratorical Contest 2013.”
