Applications sought for retiring Weld District Court judge’s seat

Weld County’s 19th Judicial District Nominating Commission is accepting applications for a district court judge’s position that will be vacant as of October.

As Weld District Court Judge Daniel Maus retires after 11 years in the position, the commission will interview applicants and select nominees for appointment by the governor, according to a news release from the state. Maus, who heard civil cases, appeals from municipal and county courts and DMV hearings, is slated to retire on Oct. 11.

The commission will meet on Aug. 26 at the Weld County Courthouse, 901 9th Ave., for the interviewing and selection process. Applications must submitted by Aug. 9.

Applicants must be a qualified elector of the 19th Judicial District and must have been admitted to practice law in the state for five years. The annual salary for the position is $133,228, the release states. The judge will be up for a retention vote after two years and, if approved, will serve a term of six years.

Applicants may obtain forms from the office of the ex officio chair of the nominating commission, Justice Nathan B. Coats, 2 E. 14th Ave., Denver, CO 80203. They are also available at the office of District Administrator Karen Salaz in the Weld County Courthouse and online at www.courts.state.co.us under the “Careers” tab.

Applicants must turn in the original, signed application and an identical copy stored electronically in PDF format to the office of the ex officio chair. The commission will not consider late applications.

Anyone who wants to suggest a candidate for the position may submit a letter by July 26 to any member of the nominating commission — listed below — and send a copy to the office of the ex officio chair.

Members of the nominating commission are Richard Bond, Rhonda Solis, Amy Antommaria, Henry Frey, Lynn Karowsky, Judy Knapp and Joseph Tennessen.
