Tribune Opinion: Community steps up to meet food bank’s demand

Officials at the Weld Food Bank in Greeley were getting a little nervous about meeting the demand on turkeys this year with only about a week left before Thanksgiving.

The overwhelming support from the community and local organizations, however, gobbled up any doubt about reaching the food bank’s goal. Stephanie Gausch, the organization’s director of advocacy and communications, said there was a 41 percent increase in turkey requests by its agency partners (Windsor Food Pantry, soup kitchens, Salvation Army, churches, Meals on Wheels, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Weld County, among others) than in 2012. This translated into a shortage of more than 3,500 turkeys as of mid-November for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. In part, Gausch said, the increase in requests for turkeys may come from families who have been displaced by flooding.

Much to their delight, the employees and volunteers of the food bank saw an enormous outpouring of support. With many of the turkeys coming from families who bought an additional turkey while out shopping for their own, we are once again reminded of how fortunate we are to live in this community. Neighbors helping neighbors is one aspect of this holiday season we can all get behind.

Now that we’ve ensured turkey will be on the menu for all the households that requested one in Weld County, the food bank is still in need of holiday items for Christmas. Rather than food donations, they are requesting monetary contributions. This ensures the food bank is able to purchase exactly what they need. They are able to stretch dollars much farther than the general public, with every dollar donated providing an astounding six meals. We encourage everyone who is able to spare what they can to ensure everyone in our community has a warm meal to enjoy this holiday season.
