LETTER TO EDITOR: New Year’s resolutions have a purpose

New Year’s resolutions have a purpose

Dear Editor,

Do people always take the effort to make or to set New Year’s resolutions? I have a plethora of times. My enchanting family made a tradition long ago to write up our goals and put them in Santa’s sleigh to read next year. From experience, I can say that without a doubt, anyone and everyone should make New Year’s resolutions because it helps people make goals, teaches responsibility and tests character.

Firstly, New Year’s resolutions are similar to goals and they help with any activity. Think of someone extremely famous and talented, like the prodigious Celine Dion. Imagine where she would be without the goal of succeeding. She would be a no one, with a dazzling talent unknown to the world.

Also, New Year’s resolutions aren’t just any goal that can be conjured up out of stupidity, they signify a fresh start to a 365-page book that many are just waiting to be filled for the year. Goals can open doors to unseen wonders, and will surely be a benefit throughout life.

Furthermore, goals teach numerous people responsibility. How many times has this been mentioned by teachers? Honestly, the word “responsibility” is like this generation’s overused “YOLO” or “SWAG.” If anyone can fulfill these goals, then they would learn the true definition of responsibility, and earn some themselves. Starting New Year’s resolutions now could help anyone’s future, because dreaming it, thinking it and doing it as soon as possible helps in the long run. Responsibility is crucial for life, and is the making and keeping of New Year’s resolutions.

Some people may say that New Year’s resolutions are just silly fantasies, but I am here to say that is unfounded. What they do not know is that making these spectacular goals is a test of their character. It evaluates your diligence and determination, both outstanding qualities. It takes an astounding person to set and keep New Year’s resolutions, and those who oppose them are just mediocre.

To wrap it all up, people would be brainy to make a New Year’s resolution. New Year’s resolutions bring us formidable goals, responsibility and test character.

“Within our dreams and aspirations we find opportunities,” says Sue Atchley Ebaugh, a very intelligent woman. I hope that many get a glimpse of the window of opportunity when the ball drops for the start of a New Year.

Sincerely,

Felicity Slade, Windsor Middle School seventh-grader
