Perusek roping event no longer, but Weld County students still benefitting

There won’t be the annual Bill Perusek Memorial Roping event this year, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t college students still benefiting from it.

Ten 2013 high school graduates from the area are putting to use college scholarships they received from the 10th and final Bill Perusek Memorial Roping event, which was conducted back on May 19, drawing about 500 teams to The Barn at Montero’s, north of Greeley.

Bill Perusek spent more than 32 years as Colorado Livestock Inspector with most of those years spent as supervisor for the Greeley office of the Colorado Brand Board.

Perusek was 64 when he died of cancer on Nov. 20, 2003, about two months after he was diagnosed.

The roping event was started by friends and family the following year. That event has grown to include more than 100 sponsors, and it’s those sponsors that have made it possible to increase the number of scholarships each year, said Barb Perusek, Bill’s widow.

Since its inception, about $90,000 in scholarships have been awarded.

In reminding the community that the Bill Perusek Memorial Roping event has come to a close and won’t be taking place this spring, Barb wanted to acknowledge those who earned scholarships last year from the event.

The 2013 scholarship recipients, who are currently gearing up for another semester, are:

• Health Long, a graduate of Platte Valley High School in Kersey, attending Colorado State University.

• Rebecca Reanne Reeve, a graduate of University High School in Greeley, attending the Colorado School of Mines.

• Brandon Lind, a graduate of Windsor High School, attending the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
