The barren spot filled with rocks and dirt at the southeast corner of Windsor Middle School is in definite need of some tender loving care.
That’s exactly what it will receive thanks to the school being selected as a recipient of the 2013 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant worth $5,000 for a beautification project.
The grant is from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation and the money is to be used for approved school improvement projects that must be completed within a year.
“It’s a tangible way for us to beautify the exterior of the building to represent publicly what we know goes on inside the building,” Windsor Middle School principal Eric Johnson said. “We want our kids and our community to be proud of both what we’re doing in our walls as well as what goes on outside. That said, I think it’s paramount in this day and age to be good stewards of taxpayers’ dollars, so we wanted to make sure we weren’t spending money that could be dedicated to technology or student resources in the building to take care of some exterior needs.”
Johnson said he found out about the grant from the school’s media specialist Tami Stoudt, and decided to apply for it.
Johnson said he wants the students and parents to be involved in the landscaping project to instill some pride to the area. Johnson added that the area, which faces Main Street and is off the old two-story wing, could be used as an outdoor classroom when the project is completed. He said some Lowe’s employees will also be helping with the project.
“We were very excited to be selected as a recipient of the award, and we’re going to be working with our local Lowe’s store in Fort Collins as well as with our parent groups and some students groups to come up with a plan and begin the process of beautifying that area,” Johnson said.
According to Danielle Conover, administrative secretary at Windsor Middle School, 1,500 schools applied nationally for the grant and as many as 500 were awarded for this school year.
Johnson said he would like to see native grasses, bushes, shrubs, benches and some larger rocks to make it a vibrant and welcoming spot.
Johnson said the project will be worked on through the end of the school year and into summer so when the new school year begins in August the biggest portion of the project will be finished. Johnson said he hopes to include any amount of local landscape support or knowledge as the process unfolds.
