New Zealand teenage girl experiences a taste of Windsor life

Georgia-Rae Taylor brought some words of wisdom from Down Under to the students at Windsor Middle School and Windsor High School recently.

The 17-year-old girl from New Zealand captured the Lions National Speechmaker Competition in August 2013, and won a youth exchange to North America for the six weeks of her summer holidays. Windsor Middle School gifted and talented teacher Ruth Brunner said Taylor spent Jan. 16 inspiring her students for the upcoming Optimist Speech contest, and learning Sign Language. She also visited the Windsor High School drama practice.

Taylor was in Canada for three weeks during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays in a town called Lake Lenore in the Saskatchewan region.

“I had many amazing experiences there, such as having a white Christmas, attending the local school, hockey games, snowmobiling, skating and forming some amazing friendships, ones I will take back with me to New Zealand,” Taylor said.

Taylor arrived in Colorado on Jan. 4 and spent two weeks in Windsor, staying with a local family, Cindy and Chris Burkhart.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Windsor, skiing on Snow Mountain Ranch and Winter Park a definite highlight,” Taylor said. “Coming to WMS was an amazing experience as it was so fantastic to see what schools are like here in America. I had an absolutely fantastic day and cannot thank the wonderful staff and delightful students for welcoming me into their classroom and being so nice and friendly. I feel truly privileged to have been able to attend WMS and help out in the classes. This trip has meant I was able to see authentic life and I am so inspired by the goodness and greatness of humanity and the wonderful blessing we all have of being able to live on this fantastic planet. Thank you WMS and maybe one day, I will see you again.”
