About Town: New police detective position

In 2014, the Windsor Police Department is adding a new detective to the Investigations Division.
The investigations case load has steadily increased and the Town Board responded by authorizing the addition of another detective.
Fraud, identity theft, and internet crimes have become a daily event and these crimes require extensive investigation. The added detective will improve service for victims and allow patrol officers to continue to protect the safety of the public by relieving them of the time consuming processes needed for these types of investigations.
Detectives are responsible for the following types of things:
» Examining crime scenes to obtain clues and evidence, such as loose hairs, fibers, clothing, or weapons.
» Interviewing victims and suspects.

» Providing testimony as a witness in court.
» Analyzing completed police reports to determine what additional information and investigative work is needed.
» Preparing charges or responses to charges, or information for court cases, according to formalized procedures.
» Obtaining evidence from suspects.
» Noting, marking, and photographing location of objects found, such as footprints, tire tracks, bullets and bloodstains, and taking measurements of the scene.
» Providing information to lab personnel concerning the source of an item of evidence and tests to be performed.
» Preserving, processing, and analyzing items of evidence obtained from crime scenes and suspects, placing them in proper containers and destroying evidence no longer needed.
» Recording progress of an investigation, maintaining informational files on suspects, and submitting reports to a commanding officer or magistrate to authorize warrants.
» Organizing scene search, assigning specific tasks and areas of search to individual officers.
» Videotaping scenes where possible, including collection of evidence, examination of victim at scene, and defendants and witnesses.
» Coordinating with outside agencies and serving on interagency task forces to combat specific types of crime.
» Preparing and serving search and arrest warrants.
Scheduling polygraph tests for consenting parties and recording results of test interpretations for presentation with findings.
