DINING IN, DINING OUT: Kobe Sushi offers different dining choice at Centerra Marketplace

It’s always nice to have a variety of dining options in a large shopping area. From fast food to fine dining, the Centerra shopping center, spanning both east and west of Interstate 25, does pretty well in this department, and Kobe Sushi has added another dimension to the mix.
Situated next to Menchie’s Yogurt, Kobe occupies a rather small space but they make use of what they have. A limited number of tables, dark woods, sparse décor and a sushi bar make up the scene.
I visited Kobe on a Sunday night with my family, which was a pretty quiet time to go. The menu seemed reasonably extensive with a variety of cold and hot appetizers, sushi and sashimi, teriyaki, tempura, noodles and rice.
My least favorite part of the meal was the service. Our server seemed annoyed, bored and uninterested in helping us in any decision making. Given that sushi is a particularly unique cuisine, a few suggestions would have been highly appreciated.
Still, we managed on our own to order what we thought would be a rather generous amount of food. In fact, it turned out to be much less than we anticipated and required a trip to Menchie’s afterward to satisfy our hunger. The point being that the portions here are pretty small. I’ve dined at sushi places before where six rolls/items and four soups would be more than enough for four people.
Having said that, the food was quite good. We all started with a small bowl of the egg drop soup ($1.50) which was tasty, not too salty and had plenty of floating egg in it.
We then tried an assortment of items which included a five-piece sushi sampler ($7.95), striped bass sashimi, ($4.25/2 pieces), a salmon roll ($4.75), a spicy scallop with crunchy roll ($5.95), a dynamite roll ($10.95) and a spicy crab tempura roll ($9.50).
The sampler consisted of yellowtail, tuna, imitation crab, salmon and shrimp atop balls of rice. Overall, the fish seemed fresh and flavorful, though real crab would have been nice.
The two spicy items were not spicy at all. I’m very attune to any level of heat in a dish, and I did not discern one bit of spiciness in either the scallop or crab tempura items. Still, I liked them.
The tempura was the most visually appealing as the battered and fried pieces were placed in a pile, scattered with delicious, crunchy delicacies and drizzled with a creamy sauce.
The dynamite roll was also very good with baked scallop and shrimp enveloped in rice and seaweed (California-style) and topped with a savory sauce.
The salmon rolls were small but flavorful, and the scallop with crunchy rolls had a nice balance of soft and crispy textures going on.
Overall, I think each item could have used more seafood and the rolls themselves could have been a bit larger.
Still, it’s nice to have a different dining choice in the Centerra Marketplace. Kobe Sushi provides an option beyond the traditional sandwich, salad or pasta route that is predominate in the area. And there is always frozen yogurt for dessert.
