FAA to give Greeley-Weld County Airport $5.8 million grant
August 27, 2016
The Greeley-Weld County Airport will get $5.8 million in federal help for a runway revamp.
The Federal Aviation Administration will dole out $5,863,182, according to news releases from U.S. Sens. Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet that came out Wednesday afternoon.
Officials will use the grant to renovate the airport's 17-year-old runway, said Manager Gary Cyr.
"It's kind of a mill and fill," he said.
Crews will remove the surface of the 10,000-foot stretch and replace it.
When runways age, they oxidize, Cyr said. It makes them deteriorate, leaving little rocks behind.

The total project will cost roughly $6 million, so the grant will cover most of the cost.
"It's important the federal government provides the necessary resources to our local governments so they can best serve our communities," Gardner said in the release.
