FBI warns of phone scam that uses agency’s phone number

The FBI is concerned about a new phone scam that uses FBI phone numbers to demand money from victims.

According to a news release from the FBI, criminals are calling northern Colorado phone numbers from phones that display the FBI's phone number.

The scam claims the FBI is investigating victims, and that victims will be arrested if they don't pay a fee immediately.

The release states the FBI does not call or email private citizens to demand money or threaten arrest. Anyone who is contacted by a caller is encouraged to verify the information with the FBI, according to the release.

The Denver Division of the FBI can be reached at (303) 629-7171. Victims can file a complaint online through the agency's Internet Crime Complaint Center, http://www.IC3.gov.

Phone numbers for all 56 FBI field offices can be found at http://www.fbi.gov.
