In a return to northern Colorado for its owner, Fusion Light and Design will open a location in downtown Windsor in the next few months.

After sitting empty for months, 425 Main St. — the longtime home of The Windsor Beacon newspaper — soon will have a tenant open for business in downtown.

Fusion owner Kristen Bland said Thursday she expects the company's Windsor location to open in early May with about three employees.

Bland said when it comes to lighting her business does it all, from lighting design and specification to purchasing for residential and commercial projects. She works with private clients, architects and designers and helps them figure out the right lighting and designs for their projects.

“Our hearts are in northern Colorado. I am from Loveland and my husband is from Greeley, so we met in the middle and now we live in Windsor.” Kristen Bland Owner

"We're sort of like the one-stop shop," she said.

The location also will showcase select pieces of furniture from Rustic Trades Furniture, which builds custom rustic wood furniture.

The Windsor location will be an expansion for Fusion, which started six years ago in Denver, where the company will keep its larger showroom.

Lighting is a labor of love for Bland. Years ago, she worked as an interior designer, but when the Great Recession hit, work for interior designers became scarce, she said.

Bland ended up taking a job with a lighting company. She'd had a long-standing interest in the lighting field, and when she started working in the industry full-time, that interest turned into a desire to run her own lighting design company.

"Once I started in lighting, I was like, 'I'm never going to leave, always going to stay in lighting,' " she said. "There are technical aspects about it and decorative design aspects about it, so you get a mix of both."

More than six years into owning her own light and design business, she still loves it, she said. Although some design experts work almost exclusively on certain types of projects — like restaurants, homes or retail stores — lighting design gets her involved in all kinds of projects.

With her downtown Windsor business location, however, Bland said she will cater heavily to retail clients in addition to builders and designers. She's particularly excited about the downtown community in Windsor.

"Our hearts are in northern Colorado," she said. "I am from Loveland and my husband is from Greeley, so we met in the middle and now we live in Windsor."

She moved her family from Denver to Windsor this past year, and when she saw the available 425 Main Street location on one of her family's frequent trips downtown, she said it seemed like a perfect fit.

"Even when I started my business six years ago, my goal was to always have two locations," Bland said. "One in Denver and one in northern Colorado. … So it finally feels like it's coming full-circle."
