Grandview Elementary food drive efforts kick off Monday
January 20, 2013
Students from Grandview Elementary School are ready to kick off their annual campaign to alleviate hunger in Windsor and Weld County, learning civic leadership and community engagement along the way.
The fifth annual Cans Around the School food drive starts Monday with students, parents and volunteers canvassing the community for about an hour, distributing 1,500 collection bags to neighborhoods throughout Windsor. Those efforts come full circle Sunday when bags are gathered and volunteers line the school’s halls with collected cans. Students are encouraged to bring their own food from home Jan. 28 to add to the community’s collection.
Residents can drop off their own canned goods at the school from Jan. 28-31.
The display of charity will line the halls throughout the week before being boxed up and distributed to the Weld Food Bank and the Windsor Food Pantry.
Organizers are looking to improve upon past four years’ success, which has netted more than 13,000 pounds of donated food. Among the products most requested are canned fruit, tomato-based products and canned meals. To find out more or to get involved, call (970) 686-8600 and ask to speak to the program coordinator.
