Greeley Central’s Manuello earns individual state title, Windsor finishes fifth at 4A boys swimming meet
May 21, 2017
Greeley Central isn't typically expected to make any waves at the Class 4A State Boys Swimming Championships. Just don't tell Drake Manuello that.
With a win in the 100-yard breaststroke Saturday at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Manuello picked up the Wildcats' first individual state championship since Tate Fluger won the same event in 2000.
Not only did he win Central's first championship in 17 years, but he also placed seventh in the 100 fly and set school records in both events.
Coach Jeff Collins could not be reached for comment.
Windsor added a fifth-place team finish, paced by a fourth-place finish in the 100 fly by Colby Horton. The Wizards made the finals in six events and Riley Miller (500 freestyle), Ethan Hansbury (100 breaststroke) and the 400 relay all set new personal records.
Windsor closed the season undefeated in duals, third in the Northern Conference and with 10 new school records — many of which being broken multiple times.

Greeley West has 6th-place finisher in 5A 500 freestyle
Greeley West finished the season with five finals qualifiers at the state meet Saturday at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, led by Nathan Kenigsburg who brought home a sixth-place finish in the 500 freestyle.
"We had a really good prelim day on Friday," coach Collin Shaha said. "I'm always optimistic, but we were seeded in the mid-20s in both relays.
"We dropped more than anyone else."
The Spartans cut two seconds off their 200 relay time and 5 1/2 seconds off their 400 relay time.
We really focused on getting the relays to the finals," Shaha said. "It's so important to get those points."
Shaking things up may have had something to do with that as a slew of Spartans were in events they are not used to. Matthew Kenigsburg, Baylor Cobb and Mike Rutledge were all shifted to different events.
"They just trusted themselves that they could do it, and they did," Shaha said.
