The Windsor Farmers Market will open in its new pavilion at 5:30 p.m.Thursday in Boardwalk Park.

Creating a space for the Windsor Farmers Market is a piece of the Windsor Town Board's strategic plan that is almost complete.

Luke Bolinger, recreation supervisor with the town of Windsor, said the covered pavilion will allow a farmer's market to continue no matter the weather and will let residents feel like the market is more established.

"As far as creating a sustainable downtown farmers market, it creates more of a space for vendors, and I think it really helps define what the farmers market can be," Bolinger said.

After going without a farmers market for the past couple years, Bolinger said the town and vendors are excited. While past years have had five to eight vendors, this year the market will have between 28 and 30.

As many as 30 spaces have been planned in the pavilion, which Bolinger said will allow the town to adjust to the market and see how many residents come before considering expanding outside the covered area.

Hosting the market Thursday nights in conjunction with the Summer Concert Series also will keep the market from competing with other area stores and farmers markets, Bolinger said, because most local farmers markets are Saturdays or Sundays.

Larimer County farmers markets and other area markets helped Windsor create policies. Food safety required extensive research, Bolinger said, because the town wanted to ensure the town and the vendors follow procedure.

"Food safety is a No. 1 priority," he said.

Food assistance is accepted, as well, and Bolinger said the market will accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funds, or food stamps.

The first Windsor Farmers Market of the year will start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Boardwalk Park, and will continue to take place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. every Thursday through September 28.

The event is sponsored by Chimney Park Restaurant and Bar and Hearth Restaurant and Pub, as well as Elm Haven Fellowship, Solar City, the Windsor Downtown Development Authority and Kaiser Permanente, according to the release.
