At his swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning, Weld District Attorney Michael Rourke said he thought he knew what the highlight of his career was. He said he was wrong.

He thought it came in January 2015, when Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper swore him into office when then-DA Ken Buck was elected to represent the 4th Congressional District. In November, Weld County voters approved him for another four years in office.

Rourke said the new pinnacle of his career was "to be elected to this office by the people that we serve every day."

The ceremony lasted about 15 minutes. Weld District Court Chief Judge James Hartmann administered the oath of office to Rourke. The other attorneys in the office were sworn in Tuesday morning, as well, starting with Assistant District Attorney Robb Miller. Hartmann then administered the oath to the office's chief deputy district attorneys and deputy district attorneys.

“At least for the next four years, we will continue to make this community safe.

"When I was in the DA's office, we only had two deputy district attorneys, and we had to walk to work every day in a foot of snow," Hartmann said, eliciting a laugh from the two dozen or so prosecutors standing before him. "It wasn't that long ago."

The gilded marble courtroom was crowded with district attorney's office employees, as well as a few police officers. Rourke's sons, parents and his grandmother attended as well, and he thanked them in his short speech during the ceremony.

Then he addressed the prosecutors and police in the room.

"At least for the next four years, we will continue to make this community safe," he said. "Go forth and do justice, folks."
